Following is a record of my contribution in projects and programs as international expert in circular economy

Re-think Buildings Program under SDG12 Resource Efficient Housing Program

International Agency – United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN Habitat)

Capacity – Circular Economy Expert (2022 – 2023)

Aim of the program – To develop a strategic approach to help countries improve resource efficiency focusing on buildings and help reduce their impact on the environment.

My contributions as Circular Economy Expert

  • Developed the “Resources & circularity” Element (1 of the 4 sections) of the Housing Value Assessment Methodology (VAM) Tool.
  • VAM Tool provides assessment on sustainability and circularity for national housing program design for national housing representatives in member countries and acts as a score card which provides, ratings, findings of the assessment and feedback for improvement.
  • Developed a circularity indicator for the VAM Tool for evaluating circularity (performance aligned with principles of circular economy) for national housing programs

CiCoSA (Circular Construction & Housing in Sub-Saharan Africa) – A waste wise approach to sustainable building and construction in Sub-Saharan Africa

International Agency – United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN Habitat)

Capacity – Circular Economy Expert (2022 – 2023)

Aim of the program – To strengthen the sustainable building and construction (SBC) sector by applying principles of circular economy and low-carbon principles (waste-wise approach) to the housing value chain, improving access to affordable housing and reducing the ecological footprint of cities.

My contributions as Circular Economy Expert

  • Co-developed a policy brief for Circular Construction & Housing in Sub-Saharan Africa with National Housing Expert at UN Habitat. The policy brief contained policy recommendations for regulatory reform, uplifting research and development and capacity building for the sector.
  • Developed a “Good Practice Case Study Guide” that included selected and analysed examples of good practices in the housing, construction and building material sector in Africa and globally.  Provided key contribution in convening a global expert group to provide inputs for the CiCoSA policy brief and presented the policy brief for expert group comments representing UN Habitat in the convened forum

Use of recovered and recycled plastic in the construction industry aligned with principles of circular economy

International Agency – United Nations Environmental Program and UN Habitat

Capacity – Circular Economy Expert (2022 – 2023)

Aim of the program – To promote the correct use of plastic waste in the construction industry, preventing plastic pollution and directing valuable resources back to the circulation.

My contributions as Circular Economy Expert

  • Co-developed a global policy for the “Use of recovered and recycled plastic in the construction industry aligned with principles of circular economy” , in partnership with Global Partnership on Marine Litter unit of UNEP
  • Developed a “Global Good Practice Case Study Guide” to inform the construction sector globally, on the use of recycled plastic in construction applications, in partnership with Global Partnership on Marine Litter unit of UNEP
